Preserving History Through Living Reenactments

Company D, 99th New York Volunteer Infantry is a non-profit group dedicated to the accurate portrayal and commemoration of the men who served in the 99th New York Volunteer Infantry from May 1861 to July 1865. We provide educational and historical support to the Fort Monroe Authority's Education Department and the Fort Monroe National Park Service.

More about us and how to get started.

Company D strives to portary the unit and the personnel from the American Civil War period with complete accuracy.  The company is a not for profit organization, with a group of men from a wide range of backgrounds who all share a common passion for history.  We fully understand that this is a hobby, and as such fully respect each member's personnel commitment level. Getting started is always the hardest part.  Below's list outlines the basic items we recommend new members acquire when becoming more committed to the hobby.  Fore those wishing for a trial period, we maintain a small stock of loan items for new recuits.       

What Uniform do I need?

1. Union Sack Coat

2. Union Sky Blue Trousers w/ Suspenders

3. Union Kepi or Forage Cap

4. Black Leather Brogans

5. Flannel Shirt or Cotton Muslin Shirt

6. Wool Socks

What Equipment do I need?

1. Reproduction 1861 Springfield or P1853 3-Band Enfield Musket Rifle

2. P1851 Leather Belt with oval "U.S." Belt Plate

3. Bayonet with Scabbard (We recommend bringing your rifle when purchasing a bayonet to ensure the bayonet fits.)

4. P1861 Cartridge Box with Leather Sling

5. P1851 Haversack

6. Tin or Stainless Steel Canteen

7. Period Correct Muzzle Cleaning Kit

    1SG Macum demonstrates the hazards of improper muzzle awareness during events.  Though we use blank rounds, improper muzzle awareness can lead to injury to both reenacts and spectators.
